The Financial Service Centers of New York in conjunction with MoneyGram International is pleased to announce its 2008 scholarship program
"Rewarding Young Leaders in Our Community"
will award cash grants to
outstanding high school seniors from public and private schools in NYC’s
5 Boroughs and the surrounding NY Counties.

FSCNY and MoneyGram International provide development opportunities for young people who will return to their communities and contribute to improving the quality of life for all New Yorkers.  Students will be selected based upon leadership skills at school and in the community and academic achievement. 

The Committee will select 5 First place award winners that will receive a minimum cash award in the amount of $4,000 towards the cost of their freshman year of study at an accredited two or four-year college or university.  5 Second place award winners will receive a minimum of $2,0005 Third place award winners will receive a minimum of $500.  This year, once again, FSCNY and MoneyGram International will also select one (1) Grand Prize winner to receive a one time award of at least $7,500 towards the cost of college and a computer system.

The deadline for the 2008 FSCNY Scholarship Application has passed.  After the initial review of all applications the finalists will be selected and interviewed on
April 15 & 16, 2008.  Finalists will be notified of the specific date
they will be interviewed by the FSCNY - MoneyGram International Scholarship Program Committee at 10 East 40th Street – Suite 1308, New York, New York.  Students will be notified of their awards by letter, on or about April 25, 2008.

The first-place scholarship recipients will receive their awards at FSCNY’s 16th Annual Conference luncheon, to be held at the Brooklyn Marriott Hotel on Tuesday, May 6, 2008.  (Prior to this event, the winners will be responsible for providing the FSCNY - MoneyGram International Scholarship Committee with documentation of their acceptance of an offer of admission to an accredited college or university.) 

Posters with photos of the scholarship winners will be displayed throughout the year in FSCNY member stores as a way of acknowledging hard work and good citizenship.

Note for Guidance Counselors

Guidance counselors should advise their students to apply for this scholarship based on the following criteria:

  • Academic achievement/improvement

  • Demonstrated leadership in their school

  • Demonstrated involvement in their community, contributing at least 50 valuable hours of volunteer service each year of high school.
     

History of the FSCNY Scholarship

The college scholarship program has helped more than 175 deserving students attend Ivy League and other selective universities and colleges.  Since the program's inception, nearly $350,000 in college scholarships have been awarded.

In total, FSCNY members and partners have donated over a half-million dollars to deserving New Yorkers through the FSCNY scholarship, school uniform, and other community service programs. In 2003, the association received the Activa Award from the Financial Service Centers of America, for its exemplary community service.

The scholarship program, “Rewarding Young Leaders in Our Communities,” awards one time cash grants to outstanding high school seniors using the following selection criteria: a commitment to community service, perseverance in the face of significant obstacles, leadership skills in school, financial need and academic achievement as selection criteria.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM WINS NATIONAL RECOGNITION

CCANY (FSCNY) Wins 2003 FiSCA Activa Award for Outstanding Community Service

(October 29, 2003)

CCANY (FSCNY) was recognized by the Financial Service Centers of America, the industry's national organization, for its highly successful College Scholarship Program and its School Uniform Fund, as well as its many financial contributions and community service activities -- from supporting local Little League to area hospitals and non-profits.  CCANY joined forces with Western Union to raise over $300,000, providing over 3,000 youngsters with school uniforms.  Through the College Scholarship Program, CCANY and partner Travelers Express/MoneyGram have awarded over 125 high school seniors a total of more than $225,000 since the program's inception in 1996.


FINANCIAL SERVICE CENTERS OF AMERICA SCHOLARSHIP

College-bound high school seniors may also apply for a scholarship offered by the Financial Service Centers of America (the national association for check cashers).
